Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the Facility Administrator, plans, directs leisure and recreational activities for youth at Upstate Evaluation Center. Implements and supervises individual athletic and team activities at the assigned facility; provides instruction in recreational/athletic skills and proper use of equipment. Ensures that all youth receive 1 hour of leisure and recreational (large muscle) programming daily and 2 hours on the weekends. Provides assistance in programmatic activities at the assigned facility including holiday projects summer programs, PbS physical assessments and family days. Oversees the facility incentive program. Maintains equipment and supplies used in recreational activities. Responsible for assisting with critical thinking, leadership and listening skills. Being compassion and patience. Complete required documentation, weekly reports and monthly calendars. Prepares and distributes schedule of athletic activities and leisure time activities. Assist with ordering supplies and sporting equipment for juvenile daily activities for males and females. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.

Agency Requirements: Bachelor’s degree preferred in the area of therapeutic, physical education, exercise science, art, music or related fields. Must be in compliance with and certified under Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) within six (6) months of employment. Must pass drug test and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of state law, secured facility rules, regulation as well as requirements for the control of juveniles and in compliance with SC Child Abuse Statutes. Considerable knowledge of purposed, methods, and operational practices of DJJ facilities. Ability to complete required reports to include daily ERS Reports. Ability to establish working relationships with employees. Prone positions (flat on stomach and/or back). kicks and strike motions, joint manipulations, bending at the waist and torque motions, lift hands above the head lifting 50+pound, repeated breathing(inhaling/exhaling techniques for CPR/First Aid/AED, kneel on knees (together and individually) unsupported. Safely operate a motor vehicle to include a valid state issued driver’s license, walk and/or stand extended periods of time, visually distinguish subjects of up to 75 yards, physically respond appropriately to emergency situations. Attends training and maintains certification required by CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) quires considerable knowledge of methods/procedures of planning/developing recreation programs; ability to communicate effectively. Under general supervision, annually scheduled performance review. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
