The syndromic surveillance epidemiologist supports the SC syndromic surveillance program through data quality assurance efforts, maintenance of facilities' data reporting interfaces and on-boarding of new interfaces into the system. The position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing syndromic surveillance practice in SC by supporting programs and partners in utilizing syndromic surveillance data, supporting case definition development to query the database, creating visualization tools to facilitate interpreting the data in a timely fashion and providing users training to utilize ESSENCE, the syndromic surveillance web portal utilized to access the data.

Assist in the continued development and use of early event detection systems (i.e., BioSense, hospital chief-complaint syndromic surveillance systems) by interaction with Public Health regional staff, hospital-based systems, other DHEC program staff, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Ensure compliance with ELC and OD2A grant requirements and reporting. Oversees the syndromic surveillance on-boarding process between hospitals, DHEC IT, and CDC. Conducts programmatic validation of each facility to ensure compliance with DHEC and CDC standards. Improves data quality and data timeliness of syndromic surveillance data reported. Supports and validates case definition development. Respond to syndromic surveillance data requests.

Manages internal and external syndromic surveillance data agreements and BioSense and ESSENCE training and web portal access. Analyze and investigate clusters of disease using syndromic surveillance data to quickly identify and mitigate potential disease outbreaks. Assist with data activities related to the State Health Assessment and the State Health Improvement Plan. Attend meetings and provide technical assistance to statewide coalitions or local community health assessment teams that are working to improve public health; provide data analysis and interpretation support to local and statewide partners.

Serve as the liaison between the Bureau of Population Health Data Analytics & Informatics (PHDAI) and the Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology (DADE) including regularly attending DADE meetings and participating in DADE activities, including on-call duties and utilizing business intelligence (BI) platforms for data visualizations and reporting.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements:Master's degree in Public Health in epidemiology, biostatistics or a closely related field.

Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the *Council for Higher Education Accreditation*.

Preferred Qualifications

MPH/MS in epidemiology or biostatistics with limited experience in public health working in infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance. Ideal candidate will have a strong background in infectious disease and risk factors.
