Job Summary: The Chair reports directly to the Dean, works collaboratively with the Dean’s cabinet, and partners with the clinical department chairs and vice-chairs in order to achieve the mission, vision, and guiding principles of the School. The Chair is the individual responsible for leadership and continued academic development of the faculty of the multidisciplinary department of Biomedical Sciences and is charged with ensuring the effective delivery of the content of the biomedical science curriculum.

Key Responsibilities: Describe the key duties/responsibilities and try to group the responsibilities into key areas of functionality.
Administration: • Lead and manage the biomedical science faculty, including talent management (e.g., recruitment, appointments, non-reappointments,), coaching, mentorship, annual evaluation, career development, individual recognition, third-year reviews, promotions, and tenure. • Consult with and seek the advice of appropriate committees of the faculty with respect to educational and research policy and departmental governance. • Implement university policies as they apply to the affairs of the Biomedical Sciences Department. • Integrate the objectives of the Department of Biomedical Sciences through open communications with associate deans in faculty affairs, academic affairs, and institutional culture & inclusivity. • Serve as a member of the Dean’s Cabinet and on other key committees, as needed. • Represent the interests of the biomedical sciences faculty to SOM Administration. • Establish, oversee, and manage the annual departmental budget, financial activities, and resource allocation in a fiscally responsible manner. • Establish and integrates Department goals and budget, including management of faculty funded research awards. • Establish and oversee compensation for departmental faculty and staff. • Maintain and further optimize an environment welcoming of diversity and inclusion in all endeavors. • Nurture a culture within the department that reflects the UofSC SOM Greenville vision, mission, values and goals.
Education: • Provide instruction in the basic and/or clinical sciences using various teaching methods including lectures, laboratories, demonstrations, interactive computer-based exercises, small group discussions, and team-taught classroom activities, where appropriate. • Actively participate in ongoing educational program development and continuous quality improvement in support of the school’s innovative curriculum. • Lead the biomedical science faculty team in the delivery and continuous iterative improvement of the biomedical science curriculum. • Work collaboratively to integrate basic science and clinical learning objectives into a seamless interdisciplinary four-year medical school curriculum. • Champion cross-departmental and inter-professional education and scholarship collaboration. • Assures that the Department and SOM are in compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards regarding biomedical sciences in medical education, faculty qualifications and scholarship.
Research: • Engage in scholarly activities and promote a rich scholarly academic environment that fosters creativity, promotes collaboration and welcomes diversity of thought. • Establishes and maintains collaborations and connectedness with clinical departmental chairpersons and academic vice chairs. • Value and promote a diverse array of scholarly activities including applied basic science research, translational research, implementation science research, health systems science and education research. • Represent biomedical science faculty in Health Sciences Center activities such as Research Town Hall and Clemson University School of Health Research (CUSHR) events.
Professional: • Demonstrate professional recognition through selection for service to local, state, and national specialty organizations within their area of expertise.
Institutional Service: • Participate actively in the education and mentorship of the medical students • Maintain and further optimize a welcoming environment for medical students to learn, grow and develop • Monitor student satisfaction and performance in order to develop strategies to address any areas of concern and identify opportunities for improvement with respect to faculty and their delivery of the curriculum • Represent the Department at special events, such as Student Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day Celebration, Convocation, Commencement, Senior Banquet, AOA Ceremony, etc. • Nurture a culture within the department that reflects the UofSC SOM Greenville vision, mission, values and goals.
Advertised Minimum Qualifications :
• PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a biomedical science. • A record of substantial scholarly achievements as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, grantsmanship/ extramural grant reviews, leadership in professional societies, editorial board and/or other influential disseminated scholarly work. • Demonstrated expertise in teaching with evidence of favorable evaluations; experience in curriculum design, course or program management. • Leadership ability in the areas of academic advancement, medical education, applied or translational research. • Commitment to a transparent, open-minded, respectful and approachable leadership style. • Commitment to shared governance, collegiality, and continual professional development for faculty and staff. • Ability to build relationships among constituents and colleagues; a strong record of collaboration • Knowledgeable about future directions in medical education and their implications for medical students
