Job Summary: A research specialist I position is available immediately at the sleep Laboratory of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Department, MUSC, to conduct NIH-funded research on sleep disorder narcolepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Candidate will perform laboratory histology procedures such as brain tissue sectioning and immunostaining, operate laboratory equipment, order laboratory supplies, handle small animal surgeries, breed and maintain mouse colony. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related subjects are encouraged to apply.

Payscale Salary Range: UNIV-Band 4: $27,527.00 - $39,228.00 - $50,930.00 (min - mid - max)

Job Duties:

  • 25% - Perform intracranial injection in mice. Perform EEG/EMG sleep recording on mice. Record signals under baseline and different treatment conditions. - (Essential)

  • 20% - Perform Calcium imaging data analysis and score the sleep data with SleepSign and Inscopix software under the supervision of the PI. Research will be focused on sleep disorder narcolepsy and Alzheimer's disease. - (Essential)

  • 20% - Following standard chemical fixation protocols, perfuse and section rodent brains with microtome. Perform histology on brain sections including immunostaining. - (Essential)

  • 20% - Maintain rodent breeding colonies of transgenic mice including paring male and female mice, weaning pups, getting tail snips for geneotyping and keeping colony record. - (Essential)

  • 15% - Prepares laboratory records and maintain laboratory supplies - Orders and places laboratory supplies - (Essential)

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills:

Minimum Experience and Training Required: A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
