Job Summary: The Department of Neurosciences is recruiting for a Research Specialist I. The position will assist with behavioral and histological studies in rats to assess effects of addictive drugs on brain circuits and genes.

Payscale Salary Range: UNIV-Band 4: $27,527.00 - $39,228.00 - $50,930.00 (min - mid - max)

Job Duties:

  • 35% - Conduct behavioral testing on rodents (rats or mice). Behaviors include addiction-like behaviors, such as drug-seeking or food-seeking behavior. Sleep-wake behaviors may also be evaluated. - (Essential)

  • 25% - Perform simple surgical procedures on anesthetized rodents. This task involves preparation, assembly, and implantation of intravenous catheters. - (Essential)

  • 25% - Tabulate and organize data generated from the behavioral and histological tests described above. Performing these tasks may require using Excel spreadsheets and other software tools such as MATLAB and R. - (Essential)

  • 15% - Help with general lab maintenance and upkeep. These duties include help with ordering supplies, and preparing buffers and solutions related to ongoing lab. - (Essential)

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills: A bachelor’s degree in any scientific area is required, including but not limited to biology, neuroscience, or psychology. Prior experience in a laboratory setting, and desire for a career in science or medicine, are highly recommended.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
