This Job Opportunity Announcement will be used to fill one (1) Physician, VM-0602-15 position within Geriatrics and Extended Care Service with the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC.

Responsibilities

NOTE: The selected physician will be expected to work 12 hours per week, 24 hours per pay period, with the salary pro-rated to the actual hours worked. The Charleston VAMC Geriatrics & Extended Care Service is recruiting for an energetic, full-time board eligible/board certified geriatrician and/or palliative care physician to provide clinical care, supervise residents and students, and perform/support research in areas relevant to geriatrics. The Charleston VAMC Geriatrics & Extended Care Service is an active teaching site of the MUSC geriatric care fellowship along with MUSC and Roper Hospital. Geriatric care fellows rotate throughout the year in the outpatient clinic and spend one month in the inpatient hospice unit. The Charleston VAMC Geriatrics & Extended Care Service is also an active teaching site of the MUSC geriatric fellowship. The service is recognized as an innovative team using cutting edge technology to improve access to geriatric care for veterans. Our team is the #1 provider of geriactric care services via clinical video telemedicine in the entire VA system. This physician provides coverage in the Hospice/Palliative Medicine service to include outpatients and inpatient consults and for ongoing outpatient management as well as care coordination and providing education regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment goals, and symptom management. Incumbent will be expected to actively participate in the education of geriatric and palliative care fellows as well as internal medicine trainees and work with variety of other disciplines. Additional duties may include providing physician coverage for the Home-Based Primary Care Program in the Charleston VAMC catchment area. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some holidays and weekends

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Board Certified in Geriatrics Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. CAVHCS is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical inpatients and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to do protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
