Job Summary/Purpose : Responsible for high quality casting, splinting services and providing patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider in a clinical practice setting. May be required to provide back up support for other locations.
Required Minimum Training and Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a medical assisting program, or hospital corpsman, or completion of Ortho School or on the job training with another cast technician and have one year experience in related area of practice.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Current BLS. Must be certified through (AMT) American Medical Technologist or (AAMA) American Association of Medical Assistants or Military trained with appropriate military certification.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: The cast tech will utilize competent skill, expertise and knowledge to apply orthopedic casting, bracing and splinting for adult and pediatric patients. They are responsible for understanding and utilizing competent skill to aid patients with post surgical wounds and wound care management. Cast technicians help in clinic to triage patients and flow orthopedic patients during their visit. They are responsible for supply management and understanding the different types of braces needed for all orthopedic sub specialties. Job duties include but are not limited to the above as well as supporting physicians in patient engagement and satisfaction by engaging with patients and ensuring that patients receive excellent care while in clinic.
Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
