Job Summary/Purpose : The Virtual Monitoring Technician reports to the Tele-ICU and Remote Monitoring Nurse Manager. Under general supervision and leadership of the Telehealth Medical Director, the Virtual Monitoring Technician provides continuous monitoring of patients in clinical settings across the enterprise and beyond via multiple camera feeds. This position collaborates with administrative, technical, and clinical staff at MUSC and outlying facilities to promote safety in the inpatient environment, especially for those patients at risk of harm including suicidal patients as part of an observation spectrum. The Virtual Monitoring Technician is responsible for real time assessment of safety risks and intervention via a predetermined escalation algorithm.
Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor’s degree; or an associate’s degree in a health-care or human services field; or high school diploma and completion of a recognized allied health care course or high school diploma and one-year experience in a patient care setting; or EMT or Paramedic certification; or a Nursing student enrolled in an accredited institution with the completion of one Adult Medical/Surgical course with hands on clinical experience. Successful completion of the Video Monitoring Technician training program during the first month of employment and prior to beginning VMT shifts is required. If health-related courses are to be considered to qualify for employment, transcripts may be required with application. May require working irregular hours under stressful conditions, rotating shifts, and weekends. Employee must possess: considerable knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy; ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of complex procedures; and ability to make accurate physical observations of patients. Critical thinking skills and a customer service oriented demeanor essential.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Certification in Basic Life Support required prior to completion of general orientation. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
