Under the direction of a physicist develops treatment plans using computer equipment. Confers with Radiation Oncologist to give prescribed doses to tumor volume while sparing surrounding tissues. Checks calculations and cumulative doses in charts. Assists physicist with weekly QA required for patient care. Under the direction of a radiation oncologist performs radiation therapy procedures including operation of therapeutic equipment. Delivers prescribed does of external beam and radioactive elements.
Education and Experience: BS degree or H.S. graduate with satisfactory completion of formal training in radiation therapy in an AMA approved school. Must be certified by the MDCB-Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
BS degree or H.S. graduate with satisfactory completion of formal training in radiation therapy in an AMA approved school with two years experience as a junior dosimetrist or
BS degree or H.S. graduate with satisfactory completion of formal training in radiation therapy in an AMA approved school with three years experience as a Radiation Therapist.
Licensure/Certification: Must be registered by MDCB. Certifications must be kept current.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of radiation therapy theories, practices and procedures to provide quality care and treatment. Ability to calculate and deliver prescribed does of extern radiation to patient. Ability to calculate and deliver prescribed amount of radiation through the use of brachytherapy sources. Knowledge of total body irradiation practices. Knowledge of radiation safety to ensure appropriate exposure to patients, staff and the public. Proficient in dose calculations and equipment operations. Ability to maintain exact patient records. Skill in maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in maintaining effective working relationship with medical staff, physicist and therapists. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to communicate clearly.
Other: Ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. Must be self directed and able to work independently. Professional and neat appearance is required. Must maintain strict confidentially to work related information.
Contacts: Will have constant interaction with Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists, Physicists and other departmental employees. Will interact frequently with patients and their families. Will also interact frequently with nursing staff in other departments. May occasionally be asked to interact with outside vendors.
